Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are monospecific antibodies that are identical because they are made by a single type of immune cell, which is a clone of one parent cell.

mAbs can be produced against almost any substance. Because they are highly specific to their target, monoclonal antibodies are used both for detection (diagnostic) and treatment (therapeutic) purposes.

Diagnostic Applications:

  • Biochemical analysis for the diagnosis of pregnancy, cancers, humoral disorders, and infectious diseases.

Therapeutic Applications:

  • Direct use as therapeutic agents against disease-causing organisms, in the treatment of cancers, for immunosuppression after organ transplants, and in the treatment of AIDS and autoimmune diseases.

  • Used as targeting agents in therapy, such as immune toxins (for cancer treatment), in drug delivery systems, for dissolving blood clots, and in radio-immunotherapy for tumors.
